We Caught A Fish
As you reflect on the summer, what do you remember?
I’m just back from Greece and when people ask how the trip was I say “we caught a fish!”
Picture this. Sitting on the back of the boat reading a book and all of a sudden chaos ensues. I hear one of the crew members screaming up to the Greek captain STOP! STOP THE BOAT! Startled, I look over to see what all of the fuss is about and watch another crew member jump from one deck down to the next running to help with the fishing rod that was nearly bent in half. I inch over to see what they caught, keeping my distance so I don’t interfere with what now has five grown men running around frenetically. Then out comes another captain with a rope tied around his waist, climbing over the side of the boat with a spear gun and gaff at the ready.
We caught a fish. A decent sized tuna that made for quite a feast that night. That’s what I remember about my trip.
I talk a lot about the value of human connection. The Ben Shelton vs. Carlos Alcaraz quarterfinal tennis match got me thinking about the power of emotions too. Watching highlight reels the next day is not the same as sitting in the stadium, hearing and feeling the roars of the players and the crowd . . . minute by minute, hour by hour, until 3:33 a.m., the latest finish in US Open history. Experiencing the energy and emotions in real time makes memories that last.
As we face the final stretch toward year-end, think about how you plan to connect with investors. How can you make an impression that lasts so they remember you and your fund?
