It’s mid-July and you need an action plan

Do the math with me: how many weeks between Labor Day and Thanksgiving? Eleven weeks on paper. Subtract conference travel, school breaks, and the pre-holiday fade and you have about nine real working weeks left to close anything this year. December? December is for paperwork, not new conversations.

Most managers treat September 1 as the starting line. Wrong! September 1 is the beginning of harvest season for seeds planted earlier in the year. Fall conference season kicks off before Labor Day (oh heyyy McGuireWoods). Many fund managers buy into the adage “sell in May and go away.” Having lived through multiple fund booms and busts I understand why. That said, I believe fundraisers who follow that mantra tend to fail.
