Lost in Translation

GP/LP communication breakdowns frustrate me. A good translator catches the disconnect in real time and corrects it.

At the end of a meeting, an investor made a simple ask: send a couple of month-end portfolio snapshots so he could see the holdings and how they evolved.

Reasonable for an SMA investor.

I told the manager exactly what to send and how to frame it.

He overthought it. He cherry-picked random intra-month snapshots, gave no context, and waited three weeks to respond. The investor went quiet. We lost the allocation to a manager who was more transparent and more responsive.

Nothing about the strategy failed. The communication did.

You have sat in that meeting from one side or the other. The LP came for an answer to one simple question and left without it. The GP delivered what he thought was the perfect pitch, then watched the follow-up go unanswered.

GPs and LPs talk past each other constantly. Managers answer the question they want to answer, not the one that was asked.

The cost is real: lost capital, broken trust, and deals that go to the clearer communicator.
